New Amsterdam Theatre Rules
These rules have been put in place at The New Amsterdam to avoid disruption during any event taking place but also to ensure that every attendee can enjoy their experience.
The New Amsterdam Theatre has a list of rules and policies for guests to follow. This is to ensure that both the audience and actors have a smooth, uninterrupted experience. Audience members are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these ahead of time for the best experience. Here are some of the main rules for you to be aware of:
1. Do not arrive late to a show
Please remember that if you arrive after the event has begun, it will be distracting to others, including the actors on stage and other people in the audience.
A recommended time to arrive is 30 minutes prior to the start of an event.
2. Do not swap seats
Please stay in your correct seats during a performance.
As you book your tickets for an event online you will be allocated a specific seat number, this should be kept the same at all times. As others will be arriving and will want to sit in their chosen seats also.
3. Do not use your cell during a performance
Please keep all use of electronic devices to an absolute minimum. Turn off or switch cell to silent before the event begins and remember to check any beepers or alarms too.
Code of conduct
The New Amsterdam Theatre revolves around a simple code of conduct for guests to follow. Here are the rules:
- Guests under the age of 14 should be accompanied by another guest aged 14 or older.
- Guests will not disrupt a performance in any way.
- Guests are not permitted to hang, display or distribute material in the theatre.
- Patrons may not engage in demonstrations, speeches, or the use of any flag, banner, or sign.
- Patrons should only sit in the seat on their ticket and may be required to display their ticket if requested by a member of staff.
- Guests should comply with all directions from theatre staff regarding operations and emergency response procedures.
- Guests should not smoke tobacco or e-cigarettes.
- All bags, parcels, clothing and other items may be subject to screen or security checks. You must store large bags at coat check. Patrons with concerns may also request alternative screening processes.
- Photography, videotaping or recording is not permitted during the performance.
- Visibly intoxicated guests may be asked to leave.
Prohibited items
It is also important to note that there are a number of items that are prohibited by the theatre. This is to ensure everyone’s safety before, during and after a performance. These items include:
- Weapons of any kind (this includes firearms, ammunition, knives, scissors etc), as well as objects that appear to be weapons (including toy guns, blasters, and so on).
- Alcoholic beverages, marijuana or illegal substances.
- Outside food and beverages.
- Cameras or video-recording equipment.
- Flashlights and laser pointers.
- Noisemaking devices and fireworks.
- Pets or other animals apart from service animals. Service animals need to remain on a leash and under the control of the owner at all times.
- Any other item theatre staff believe to be harmful or disruptive – keep in mind this is at their discretion.
As a general note, the New Amsterdam Theatre has the right to refuse entry or require any person to leave the theatre without a refund.
Dress code
When attending a play at the New Amsterdam Theatre, there is no strict dress code that is enforced. However, many guests choose to dress in smart-casual attire.
Safety procedures
Note that the theatre has a number of safety procedures in place to safeguard guests in the event of an emergency. If these procedures are put into place, you should closely follow the directions of the stewards. They will guide guests to evacuate the theatre if necessary.
